Karma and Worship
Karma is an OOC representation of how much a deity likes you. Each offering you make, whether it be a prayer or an item or even participation in a quest, can earn you karma points [KP] which appear as OOC icons in your sidebar and as IC tokens in your inventory. When you reach a certain number of karma points, you can trade them in and ask for a boon or a favour such as a special weapon or a unique pet.
Gaining Karma
You can gain karma in many different ways, both in-character and out. Some are easier than others but will not earn you much in the way of karma points; others are dangerous but more rewarding. It's up to you which you choose. ^^
- Contests
A purely OOC method, entering contests is an easy way to earn karma. The monthly trivia usually has at least one question offering karma points and the more random contests, such as Exploring Elysia, normally offer a nice amount too.
- Offerings
The easiest - and least dangerous - IC method of earning karma is for your character to leave money or items in the bowls beneath their chosen god's statue. Each god is different and will be more or less receptive to certain types of items but it's up to you to figure out which.
- Monetary Offerings
Generally speaking, each $10 is worth 1 karma point up to a maximum of 20KP per item (the gods are not that impressed by worldly goods, after all). However, it should be noted that gods don't value money all that much and that financial offerings will bore them after a time, thus making the rewards fewer and further between.
- Sentimental Offerings
If an item you offer holds sentimental value, you could earn up to double the amount of karma for it.
- Questing
The most dangerous IC method of earning karma, you can join in on official plots and quests. Quests usually involve other rewards as well as karma, including special weapons and potions.
- There are other methods but it's up to you to find them. ;)
Divine Rewards
There are different levels of karma, each one represented by a special icon to quickly let you know how much karma you have. You can also click on the icons in your sidebar to be brought to this page quickly and easily. ^^ Each icon determines the type and magnitude of the favour or boon you can request.
1 point
Bronze stars are the equivalent of 1 karma point and are worth very little. You will not receive a token for a bronze star, nor can you ask for anything in return, but you can save them up. ^^
5 points
Silver stars represent 5KP and can be saved up or traded in for the following boons:
- Up to $20
- Healing of minor injuries from an Upper Level god
20 points
Upon reaching five silver stars, they will combine to form a gold star, representing 20KP. They can be saved up or used to ask for a boon such as the following:
- Up to $100
- Healing moderate injuries from Upper Level gods
- A healing potion for moderate injuries
- Customised armour with a minor ability
100 points
Once you've reached 100KP, five gold stars will combine to create a purple star and token. With a purple star, you may ask for:
- Up to $500
- The healing of major injuries by an Upper Level god
- Healing potions for major injuries
- Customised armour with two minor abilities or one moderate ability
- A customised weapon with a minor ability
500 points
Purple bees are worth 500 karma points and come from the combination of five purple stars. With a bee, you can ask for:
- Up to $1000
- The healing of life-threatening injuries by an Upper Level god
- Healing potions for life-threatening injuries
- Customised armour with two moderate abilities or one major ability
- A customised weapon with two minor abilities or one moderate ability
- A minor ability from an Upper Level god
- A unique pet from Xanth's menagerie
2000 points
Butterflies are worth 2000 karma points. Though butterflies don't turn into anything, there's not much a god won't do for you at this point, and the tokens you'll receive alone are worth the effort. You can ask for:
- Up to $5000
- Resurrection from an Upper Level god
- Customised armour with two major abilities
- A custom weapon with two moderate abilities or one major ability
- A moderate ability from an Upper Level god
- A unique pet from Xanth's menagerie
