Divine Guardian

On this page… (hide)

A divine guardian is an ethereal creature bonded by Xanth to any mortal she wishes to protect. They are normally invisible, having no physical form, but appear when their ward is in danger. They are also a direct, spiritual line to Xanth and so having one makes it much more likely that your prayers will be heard.

Because they have no physical form of their own, guardians can only manifest according to the bond they share with their ward. Thus, the first time they manifest, they pluck an image from the mind of their protectee of whichever animal they can best visualise, and that form becomes their permanent representation. (In other words, players get to choose out-of-character how their character's guardian appears, but this will be their permanent form while visible from then on. As a result, you will also need to fill out the NPC form from the application template for them, most especially the physical description.)

Guardians do not interact with their wards. They are not pets, and nor are they meant to be treated as such. The only time they are even visible is when their ward is in danger.

While this is a skill, the fee to upgrade is in Karma rather than skill points. It costs 500KP to set up the initial bond with the creature, which includes the first level free. Further upgrades will then cost 100KP each. Once the bond is forged, it is permanent.

Unlike Divine Shield and other skills, Divine Guardian is transferrable. Guardians can be "attached" to a character by someone else as a gift. The character requesting the protection must pay the Karma fee for the initial bond, but it is the recipient who will then pay for any future upgrades.

Available to:

  • Anyone. However, this skill costs Karma and so Xanth would not assign a guardian to those who have earned her distrust. Please consider this before attempting to purchase this skill and discuss it with me beforehand so we can work around any potential problems.
    • requires Divine Shield in order to gain the shield boost, but no pre-requisites otherwise.

Level 1

  • The guardian will summon Xanth automatically should their protectee require resurrection, even if their ward is unconscious or already dead (still requires out-of-character notification).
  • Having a guardian will reduce the Karma required for divine healing by 10%.

  • The guardian will summon Xanth automatically should their protectee require resurrection, even if their ward is unconscious or already dead (still requires out-of-character notification).

  • Having a guardian will reduce the Karma required for divine healing by 25%.

Level 3

  • The guardian quadruples the strength of the Divine Shield while manifested, up to 100%.
  • The guardian triples the time a Divine Shield will last while manifested.
