Tanis

Name: Tanis

Size: Huge

Region: Aquatic

Lifespan: As long as it is submerged in salt water.

Appearance

Tanis is a seaweed-like plant that grows only in the depths of the ocean where it can be completely submerged. It is not green, but is rather bioluminescent. Its colors fluctuate between a soft white to an entrancing aqua. Unlike its seaweed cousins, this plant grows in large bubble or dome shapes, being entirely hollow on the inside. It is rooted to the ocean floor, which is what keeps it from floating upwards to the ocean’s surface.

Diet: It receives little to no light, and as such does not engage in standard photosynthesis like most plants do. Instead, it absorbs its nutrients from the salt water that is so readily available in the Nereid and the Ao Seas. It absorbs all of the hydrogen and impurities of the water and emits pure oxygen gas into its hollow inside.

Habitat: The depths of salt water oceans. Clippings of the plants can survive in fresh water for a month or so.

Reproduction: Tanis spreads like algae, seemingly just spreading wildly. The plant’s bubbles grow over time, frequently being used as homes for marine life once they reach a large enough size.

Special Information

Strengths/Abilities:

  • Tanis produces oxygen-rich environments under water that are habitable by amphibians and mammals alike.
  • The oxygen production also helps to form a barrier which helps stop the immense pressure of being that deep in the water.

Weaknesses:

  • It cannot survive outside of water, and cannot survive long-term outside of salt water.

Uses:

  • Tanis Flake is a clipping of a tanis plant that has been submerged in a gel substance made from salt water that has been cooked down with phikeia clippings. This prolongs the life of the plant for around a year. Tanis Flake is used by simply placing it under your tongue and holding your breath. The gel quickly dissolves and the plant begins emitting oxygen as it combines with your saliva. A small flake can provide oxygen for an hour, while the largest available can last for up to six.
  • The bubbles the tanis forms can be used as homes in Nymph communes.

Origin: The tanis is a little known plant that is only ever seen in coastal cities such as Espur and Marport. The first sightings of it were simply tendrils that had been broken off by turbulent waters and washed to shore, only to be found eventually by wildcrafters and herbalists.
