Name: Rakeri, also known as rakeri mushrooms.
Size: Individual mushrooms never grow larger than six inches, so they're a tiny fungus. However, the rakeri grow in large clusters so they can seem much bigger.
Region: They grow underground in openings where they can absorb solar energy during the day but have the protection and minerals they need to survive.
Lifespan: Individual mushrooms live for up to six months but clusters can survive for decades.
Appearance
Rakeri are pale pink- or lilac-tinted white mushrooms with a rosy underbelly and slightly darker pink or lilac spots on top of the domed head. They grow in large clumps in the openings of caves and mines where they can collect and store solar energy during the day that then is emitted as bioluminescent energy at night. This energy makes the rakeri mushrooms glow softly in shades of pink and lilac whilever there is no natural light from another source.

Behaviour
Remarkably, not all rakeri need to be under sunlight to store solar energy. There is a great deal of transferrence and communication between individual mushrooms in a single patch, so that even if only a couple of the stalks can absorb sunlight, that energy is passed down and shared among the collective.
This makes their storage capacity larger and much more efficient, and means that a cluster of rakeri mushrooms can stretch as far as a hundred yards into a cavern or mine shaft before the patch becomes unsustainable, or even further if more of the mushrooms have access to the daylight.
Diet: The fungi absorb sunlight and nutrients from their environment.
Habitat: Rakeri need moist dark places surrounded by rocky minerals, but also require sunlight so they can only grow in underground areas that are open enough to admit sunlight, such as the entrances for caves and mine shafts or even the bottom of shallow empty wells.

- Rakeri are eaten with salads, providing a somewhat fresh but earthy taste when raw, or a milky taste when poached or fried.
- In places where caverns and mines must be traversed even at night (such as Rowan Caverns), rakeri patches are left alone as free sources of nocturnal lighting.

Where did the plant come from? Did it evolve from another species, was it one of Xanth's experiments, or something else?
