The Vale of Tears is a valley in Nirim, edged by sharp mountain ridges and blocked in at both ends by the Sea of Stars and a waterfall. Fertile and idyllic, the Vale belongs to the Dracovari living in the White City, being both a tremendous gift to their species — and a cage.

While dragons are technically permitted to enter the Vale of Tears, there are so many restrictions placed on their behaviour while there that they usually only do so when Summoned. Impiti are the only real exception to this rule; there are several nests, inhabited by some hundred impiti each, scattered throughout the mountains and the valley itself. (There is also evidence of wyrim tunnelling through at the end of the valley, but these are migratory so are forgiven their trespasses as long as they don't cause structural damage.)
