Nirim
Nirim is a massive planet created by Xanth in 100 XA when the dragons decided to leave Earth to the humans they had once governed. It was designed to be a safe haven for all dragons (including those the Draconi would have preferred to leave behind) so climate, terrain and wildlife vary dramatically across the realm. AstronomyThere are five moons in orbit around Nirim, and all of them are visible. They range in size and distance, with Krilnek (appearing as if another planet in the night sky) being the largest and Serenik (seeming roughly the size of a fist) being the smallest. Before the Third Migration, Elysians assumed the dragons had no names for their sun and moons because they were rarely referenced in public. It has since become clear that not only do these celestial bodies have names, but they are also significant to draconic culture in many ways. This importance is evident in the very simplicity of the names, which have only one or two syllables compared to the vast majority of complex draconic names. These names also top the very short list of words that dragons speak verbally. Physical GeographyNirim is made up of a great number of continents, islands, and smaller landmasses, all riddled with lakes, rivers and inland seas. Fifty per cent of Nirim is water, but the planet is otherwise very similar to Earth before the humans took over. Climate varies from the arctic conditions of the northern and southern poles to the humid jungles on the equator. There is plenty of space for all Drach and Greater Drach subspecies to claim at least a square mile each (which the Impiti share), with the many oceans and rivers going to the Asiati. Nirim is not only large but also incredibly fertile, with very active eco-systems which provide an abundant food supply. Anything from the insects, small and large, that feed the Impiti to the giant sheep-like creatures that feed the Draconi grow in great numbers here. InhabitantsOutside of the White City, which was founded only recently in 9,998 XA, Nirim is inhabited solely by dragons (and their prey). They guard their realm jealously and refused to have a portal so they could control who entered their territory, so the Vale Treaty negotiations2 were long and arduous. Even now, they refuse to allow non-dragons to venture beyond the Vale and are very strict about who gets to leave the White City at all. By sheer numbers, the Impiti make up the vast majority of the draconic population. However, of the Drach and Greater Drach subspecies, the Draconi are the most common — as well as being the most commonly seen. Wyrim are much fewer in number and tend to stay in their underground burrows out of sight and out of mind. History
1 The population statistics for the dragons are a guesstimate as no one has managed to survey Nirim's inhabitants fully. The numbers also include the Dracovarian population of the White City, so they may be a little off. ⇑ 2 The Vale Treaty, also known as the Treaty of the Vale, was an agreement between the Lindwyrm and the Oroboros gifting a small area (the Vale of tears) to the Dracovari for settling. The negotiations began in 9,982 XA but were going so badly they had to be mediated by Xanth's Aides until construction finally began on the White City six years later in 9,988 XA. ⇑ << Unbonded Summoners | Dracovari | White City >> Page last modified on February 14, 2012, at 06:25 AM |
