Hornshead Peninsula (click map for full view) Source image from Triple Bridge Ltd. Hornshead Peninsula spears into the sea at the northern-most tip of the Apolli Mountains. Jagged limestone pinnacles jut up to twenty feet above the canopy of the trees, crashing ever north towards a three-hundred-foot drop into the Nereid Ocean. These rock spires, shaped like dragon teeth or claws, are incredibly sharp and home to thousands of birds which nest in crooks and crevices in the rock face. No humanoids live on the peninsula, and this is perhaps a good thing. It has been said that no one alive could withstand the cacophony that comes from the peninsula's many thousands of inhabitants, each one squeezed into tiny nesting spaces and calling out day and night. But Hornshead is home to more than just the birds. At the foot of the three-hundred-foot cliff is a sandy beach where seals, walruses and the like come to mate and rest. Dolphins, whales and porpoises sometimes pass Hornshead on their migratory path through the waters of Elysia also (though very few people have visited the peninsula to prove this, given that they must first travel either through the dangerous Chandric Forest or across the Apolli Mountains). There are many legends about Hornshead, too, though most of these are commonly accepted to be mere fiction. One such tale states that Man did once attempt to civilise the peninsula, learning to climb the dragons' teeth to harvest the birds and their eggs while fishing from the beach below. If this tale is true, there is no record of such a village, and no ruins to prove their existence. Page last modified on October 15, 2010, at 06:45 AM |
