The Fae Tree

by Emma

Life in the Fae Forest revolves around the spectacular Fae Tree, an ancient and enormous tree believed to have magical properties. It is so ancient and tall that its trunk has crumpled in on itself in places, only for new growth to twist out of the base. Thus, the base of the tree is large enough that it would take thirty people to circle it holding hands, and its uppermost branches jut out of Fae Forest's canopy to stand head and shoulders above the rest.

Many Sylvan ceremonies take place here, a hard day's walk from Sequoia Village and the Rowan Caverns. Elysia's largest imp nation (which considers itself the capital of Elysia) is also crammed into its gnarled branches, and it serves as a major landmark both from the ground and the sky.

The Fae Tree's central role is magnified by the location of the forest's main portal a mere 20 yards away, making it one of the first things forest visitors see, and the view is quite spectacular.

Dryads make their mark here when they've bonded with their element, so the base of the thick trunk and the tangled roots are almost completely covered with Sylvan symbols Shaped into the bark. These markings continue up the trunk, but are mostly hidden during the summer when many of the weaving branches disappear behind a canopy of green leaves. In the spring the massive tree is laden with gold-flecked burgundy blossoms which sparkle under the dappled light that filters through the forest canopy. The markings become more visible as autumn turns the leaves a rusty brown and drags them to the ground, but even in winter the Fae Tree loses none of its beauty — especially when snowfall casts the forest into a sparkling white wonderland.
