The Ao and Nereid Seas are actually oceans, having kept their name from when they were first discovered (separately) by explorers some time during the Age of Discovery (6,300–6,600 XA). Elysia's oceans were, at that time, believed to be a great deal smaller than they really are.

Though there are no visible or official boundaries between the Ao and Nereid Seas, they are generally accepted as being of a similar size, with Elysia's equator marking the border between them. The Ao Sea then stretches from the southern shores of Anoria all the way the eastern-most tip of the mainland near the Bay of Wolves, and all the way south to the Southern Ice; while the Nereid Sea surrounds the northern hemisphere.
