Alexandria
Alexandria is the unofficial capital of Elysia and the centre of Alexshire, a farming and fishing city built on the banks of the River Cora halfway between Lake Cora and Corantha. Most of the city is on the east bank of the river, having grown out of, and spread east from, the original settlement on the west bank where New Alexandria now stands. Divided into neighbourhoods and districts according to things like wealth, trade and even race, the city is a vibrant and bustling clash of linguistic and cultural influences. From the busy fishing docks that line the eastern bank of the river, to the suburban edges that back onto the shire's farms, the city encompasses all manner of life and — for the most part, at least — manages to keep the peace between its 172,034 inhabitants. Indeed, for centuries it has been the light of tolerance, co-operation and wealth. EconomyAlexandria is probably the wealthiest city in Elysia. Its economy is based on the surplus of fish, crops and other products (including pottery, clay, bricks, and other luxury building materials) shipped through its portal. Since Alexandria's portal is connected to almost every other portal in the Xanthian network, over 80% of Elysia's trade passes through the city at some point — which inevitably brings in more revenue from merchant lay-overs, stabling costs, trading taxes, docking fees, and so on. Surprisingly, however, it is New Alexandria that many Elysians think of when they think of "Alexandria", and this is both a good and bad thing. Certainly, New Alexandria has much greater aesthetic appeal than the more chaotic spread of variant architectural styles on the east bank. And, since Alexshire's wealthy live inside the wall, theirs is a much safer part of the city than beyond. Yet despite that, Alexandria has a charm all its own, and one that draws a loyalty from its citizens that can last a lifetime. LandmarksWhile many of Alexandria's landmarks are inside the city's defensive wall, in the 2½ square miles known as New Alexandria, there are a number of landmarks outside the Wall too. Most are relatively small, individual fountains and statues that brighten up the neighbourhood but are not necessarily legendary or attractive for tourists, but there are others known across the realms for the stories behind them.
