The Old Society
The Old Society is a human-run organisation charged with keeping Elysia secret and safe from external threats (the biggest perceived threat being the humans left behind on Earth). The Society plays a part in negotiations between the races of Elysia to ensure lasting peace between them, but their main concern is managing the presence of non-humans on Earth and threats of exposure. To this end, they have a controlling interest in many commercial enterprises and private businesses on Earth to better enable them to keep Elysia's secret, and a strong-arm division (the Blood Rites Squad) to deal with the messier aspects of their mandate. The Old Society works closely with other races to clean up the messes made by other Elysians, especially on Earth. They prefer non-violent means wherever possible, so in many cases would rather recruit those Terrans who have stumbled across Elysia's secrets — particularly if that Terran possesses desirable skills — as a way to keep them quiet. Unfortunately, not all threats can be solved peacefully or quietly. There have been many instances where Terrans have threatened to expose Elysia by going to the media or officials, and a frightening number of them have gathered enough evidence to prove their stories. More terrifying are the organisations that spring up around these individuals, organisations that will go to any lengths to annihilate or capture those they don't understand — and that's where the Blood Rites Squad comes in, when all other methods fail. PoliticsThe Society is surprisingly small considering the sheer scope of their work, with only a few representatives (who normally have other jobs) scattered across Elysia to keep an eye on the Terrans they're helping to integrate. There are actually more members on Earth, those so-called "sanctuaries" who keep up with their old lives but help further Elysia's cause (either by generating funds for the Society's use, or providing a literal sanctuary for non-humans who need a place to stay) on the side1. RelationsThe Old Society is famous for having "a finger in every pie". They work closely not only with other races but also other organisations, from the Black Rose Cabal in Alexshire to Elysia's Guild of Entertainment, so they try to maintain good relationships wherever possible. TerritoriesThe Old Society's headquarters is a small but well-maintained mews in New Alexandria, built over a stable full of equine mounts they own and use for official business. The Blood Rites Squad also room here officially, but rarely spend time in the office so only have a small corner for their use and a cabinet downstairs for their armoury. The Old Society headquarters are easy to find. There's a sign on the door and in every window displaying their logo, and almost anyone on the street could give directions. Less well known are the branches in Espur, Hesia and Nubia, which are smaller and deal only with internal affairs. Their presence here is more to keep an eye on newcomer Terrans, but is still vital. JoiningAny human could really become a member of the Old Society, but they must prove their dedication to safety and secrecy of Elysia, as well as their ability to follow up and get the job done. Humans with a deeper understanding of Earth culture and society are more useful there, but the Old Society deals with internal negotiations as well so they'll never turn away resources.
