Ascending Star
The Ascending Star (probably so named after the Sea of Stars) is Nirim's answer to Elysia's Town Guard, a military/police force which keeps the peace within the walls of the White City. PoliticsAnswering directly to the Oroboros via their Praetor, the Ascending Star is divided into units of ten knights on a three-shift work schedule, with one in reserve. Each unit operates from a specula (a small guard post), with one knight (the immotus) remaining at their post while two more patrol within their jurisdiction. Despite the White City's recent founding, many Dracovari have already migrated there from Earth, and there are great tensions within the city between they and the dragons, and amongst themselves over real estate. In answer, the Ascending Star attempts to run a tight ship with one specula for every block, the intent being to squash conflicts before they can really begin. For the most part, the Starfall Knights do manage this, but petty squabbles are still fairly common. RelationsThe Ascending Star is generally viewed as a necessary evil. Citizens sneer at the uniform (partially because Starfall Knights earn a comparatively ridiculous amount of money for apparently very little work), but are glad for their presence when problems arise. This has been proven particularly during dragon attacks in the early days of the city, when some dragons denied the restrictions placed on them in the Vale of Tears and went rogue. However, the Starfall Knights currently have the ear and the favour of the Oroboros, who ensures they are afforded hazard pay. Their occupation is one of the most difficult and dangerous within the realms, since they are frequently pitted against almost-invincible dragons. TerritoriesThe Ascending Star has jurisdiction over the whole of the White City. As well as guard posts dotted around the city itself, there are squadrons guarding each of the city's gates and the landing platform where tourists come in on dragonback. They are also often called out beyond the city's current limits to deal with issues in the Vale of Tears.
OrganisationThe Ascending Star is led by the Praetor, who answers directly to the Oroboros. His subordinates, the Starfall Knights, are all of equal rank, with only the recruits (tiri) beneath them. Patrolmen must report to the immotus, but this responsibility rotates between those on each shift so no one Knight takes permanent precedence over the rest. RanksPraetor Varius Domitilla Starfall Knight open Tiro (Recruit) open HistoryThe Ascending Star is a relatively young organisation. Given how long Dracovari can live, they've had a tough time of establishing their authority in a city already rife with various tensions. Even with the Oroboros' backing, and having proven themselves several times as a military force to be reckoned with, they are still viewed with suspicion and doubt. JoiningAny 'Varian with combat experience (physical or otherwise) and access to a dragon (through Bonded or Unbonded Summoning) may apply to the Praetor, regardless of age. Recruits are put through vigorous training exercises both within the city and the Vale, testing their ability as both patrolmen, diplomats and as Summoners (else they can't fight off rogue dragons). Assuming they complete their training successfully, they are granted the rank of Starfall Knight along with a uniform and a badge, and assigned to a squadron.
