When the dragons' attempts to assume human form failed and the species split (creating, among others, the embarrassing impiti), many left Earth altogether rather than continue to fight in the wake of such failure. While others did stay behind and were ultimately killed off by their human rivals, those who fled were given a new home: verdant, bountiful Nirim.

This was not the last of the Great Migrations, where a major proportion of a species has left one world for another, but it is the only one that directly involved the dragons en masse.
