Blood Rage

Affects: Therians

Transmission: Bodily fluids (eg. saliva, blood, etc.)

Symptoms: Purple vein rash down the neck, painful fever, excessive and inexplicable rage, intense hunger, tendency to slip into animal forms without control, and sometimes death.

History: The blood rage is a disease that exclusively afflicts Therians, though all races except for Vampires can be carriers of it. It was discovered two centuries ago by a sad accident. An herbalist mixed the wrong ingredients in the attempt to create a new aphrodisiac, and instead of heightening love, the compound heightened hate. Because of how it is transmitted, if it reaches the final stage of infection then it is typically passed very quickly due to the infected person's intense anger and lack of control over their bodies.

Progression: The blood rage is passed by the mixing of bodily fluids between someone who is either sick or a carrier and someone who is clean of the disease. It is slow to start, taking almost a week to begin showing the purple rash down an infectee's neck. Once the rash develops, however, the sickness begins to progress much more quickly and a powerful fever forms only a few days later. As the disease progresses, the irrational anger and ravenous hunger follow 10 - 20 days after the fever. About one month after the onset of both the rage and hunger the victim will begin to lose the ability to stay in their form. This final symptom causes the victim to begin to burn through their energy more quickly than they can take in nourishment, and thus eventually die from exhaustion and starvation.

Remedies: For infected Therians, the only cure for the disease at all is jalip, a mud-like salve (made from the ground shell of a tulip snail, the venom of a jade snake, and mashed coilgrass roots), which must be applied after the fever forms.
